As U.S. consumers tighten their belts, Asian automakers are downsizing their cars, following the lead of their American counterparts.

Responding to weakened demand from a United States facing a possible recession, Japanese and Korean manufacturers are dropping luxury and sport utility vehicles in favor of increasingly popular compact cars. A cheaper currency may give Korean exporters a competitive edge against Japanese manufacturers.
Japan's third-biggest car producer, Nissan Motor (nasdaq: NSANY - news - people ), said Tuesday that, from November to March, it would cut output by 28,000 units, mostly Infiniti luxury models, at its Tochigi factory and would scale down manufacturing by 37,000 units, mostly crossover SUVs--Muranos and Rogues--at its Fukuoka plant.
